Comic Con 2008 Report Day 2
Comic Con 2008 Report Day 2
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
I had a few things on my “can’t miss” list for my second day at Comic Con. Technically speaking, Thursday is the officially recognized Day 1 of the convention, but I’ll refer to it as Day 2 for the time being.
Day 2 was the day of the Doctor Who and Torchwood panels. Both panels were to be held in Ballroom 20 (second largest venue at the San Diego convention center) back-to-back. As I had heard from the Dharmalars’ Comic Con survival guides, if you want to see something being held in a room like Ballroom 20, you should probably attend the event preceding yours. That’s how I got to see Stan Lee answering people’s questions Thursday morning.
As soon as I made my way to the convention center it was time to connect with Desiree and her daughter Skylar. I had met Desiree on the Metrobuzz forums. We were first-timers to the Con and thought going through the masses of people as a trio would be better than going it alone. They were great and we had lots of fun. We managed to save seats for each other at different panels on more than a few occasions. The three of us made our way to Ballroom 20 and waited for the end of Stan Lee’s panel.
Once the Doctor Who panel started we were told that Russell T Davis wasn’t going to be there. Steven Moffat, the new head writer for the show, WAS there and there were many funny moments revolving around bondage and dating advise...
At the end of the panel they showed us an extended trailer for the next Doctor Who Christmas special. I managed to film it with my still camera’s movie mode. MB on the blogspot wanted details of the trailer so I figured I’d upload it to my YouTube page so he could see it. Little did I know that my video would end up with over 12,000 views in the first 24 hours!
The Torchwood panel followed and John Barrowman was quite the character. We were treated to a laugh-a-minute panel with a group of people that very clearly enjoyed working together and being at Comic Con.
After the Torchwood panel it was time to roam around the exhibit hall once more. That’s when I spotted the ever-elusive “Big Frakkin’ Bag” the Sci-fi booth was handing out every half-hour or so. AS it would turn out the bag would manage to elude me all convention long.
The next panel at hand was one of those recommended by Ralph of the Dharmalars. The DVD/Blu-ray Producers panel is where you get to hear from the people behind the magic you see in DVD and Blu-ray disc menus and extra features.
That’s where I met Palmer (Kirk) from the BlogSpot and Laurie, ChrisinBoston (Chris) from the Metrobuzz boards, and the Dharmalars.
The rest of my Thursday was spent bumping into Ryan and Jen from the Transmission, finding out how the Bruce Campbell signing was going to be organized, and finding some food.
The last bit of Comic Con action that night was something I decided to attend at the very last minute: Comedy Central’s TV Funhouse panel.
I laughed so hard for almost two hours. I was very happy I decided to attend. Triumph the Insult Comic Dog was the perfect way to start that panel. Here’s some video I found on YouTube of the first few minutes of the panel.
